Welding Curtains and Screens: Protecting Bystanders From Arc Flash

Everyone standing near a welding arc without a properly rated helmet is at risk from the same ultraviolet radiation that causes arc eye and skin burns in the welder, even if they're not doing any welding themselves. A welding curtain or screen exists to block that radiation from reaching anyone working nearby, sharing a bay, or simply walking through a shop, but the product category ranges from genuinely rated protective screens down to shop tarps sold with the word "welding" on the label without much behind it.

What a Rated Welding Screen Actually Blocks

A properly rated welding curtain is made from a flame-resistant vinyl or similar material specifically formulated to block UV and infrared radiation from the arc, not just to act as a visual or dust barrier. This matters because arc radiation causes real injury — photokeratitis (arc eye) and skin burns — from indirect exposure at a distance, not only from staring directly at an unshielded arc, so a bystander well outside spatter range can still be affected without a barrier in place. Genuine welding curtains list a flammability rating alongside their radiation-blocking properties, since sparks and spatter routinely land on the curtain itself and it needs to resist ignition rather than becoming a secondary fire hazard in the shop.

Color and Transparency Actually Matter

Never substitute a generic shop tarp for a rated welding curtain around any regularly used welding station, regardless of how infrequent the welding seems. Match curtain darkness and amperage rating to the actual welding process and current used at that station, not just the general category of "welding screen."

Frame, Mounting, and Coverage Gaps

A welding curtain is only as protective as its coverage — gaps at the floor, sides, or top let radiation reach around the barrier just as easily as if the curtain weren't there, since UV and IR travel in straight lines and only need a small unblocked path to reach an exposed eye or patch of skin. Portable frame systems need enough overlap between curtain panels and a footprint that actually blocks the working area from typical foot-traffic sightlines, not just a curtain hung directly behind the welder with open sides. For shared shop spaces where multiple welding stations run simultaneously, curtain placement should account for arcs from adjacent stations as well, not just the primary station the curtain is nominally protecting against.

Curtains complement but don't replace the welder's own PPE. Portable Frames vs. Fixed Installations

Shops with a dedicated, permanent welding bay generally benefit from a fixed-frame curtain system bolted or suspended in place, since it doesn't need to be repositioned and can be built with heavier-duty frame hardware than a portable unit would reasonably carry. Job sites and shops with welding stations that move — fabrication work happening in a different bay each week, or field welding on a construction site — need a portable frame system instead, typically wheeled uprights with clip-on curtain panels that can be broken down and relocated as the work moves. Portable frames trade some stability for that flexibility, and a lightweight portable frame in a windy outdoor location can tip or shift in ways a bolted fixed installation never would, so outdoor or exposed portable setups need extra bracing or weighted bases that indoor installations can usually skip.

Curtain material itself needs periodic cleaning and inspection regardless of frame type, since accumulated spatter, dust, and grime don't just look bad but can affect the material's flame resistance and radiation-blocking properties over time if allowed to build up heavily. Small burn holes from spatter should be patched or the panel replaced rather than left as-is, since even a small gap defeats the purpose of the barrier for anyone standing at the wrong angle relative to that hole, and a curtain riddled with pinhole burns has effectively lost much of its intended coverage even though it still looks functional as a whole panel from a distance.
