Work Glove Sizing and Fit: Why the Wrong Size Undermines Any Cut or Chemical Rating
A worker who orders a large glove because that's what they've always worn, without ever measuring their hand, is guessing. Glove sizing is one of the least standardized areas of PPE, since a size large from one brand can fit like a medium or an extra-large from another, and an ill-fitting glove undermines every other spec on the label, from cut level to dexterity, regardless of how good the underlying material is.
How to Actually Measure Hand Size
Wrap a tape measure around the dominant hand at its widest point, typically across the palm just below the knuckles, excluding the thumb. That measurement in inches roughly corresponds to glove size: around 7 inches is a small, 8 inches a medium, 9 inches a large, and 10 inches an extra-large, though the exact breakpoints shift slightly between manufacturers. Measuring the dominant hand matters because most people's hands differ slightly in width, and sizing to the larger hand avoids buying a glove that's tight on one side and loose on the other.
Length matters separately from width. A glove sized correctly for palm width but too short leaves fingertips jammed against the seam, which reduces dexterity and accelerates wear at the fingertip, often the first place a glove fails. Fit Problems and What They Actually Cause

Measure both palm width and finger length before ordering, and check the specific manufacturer's size chart rather than assuming your usual letter size carries over — it frequently does not. Why Sizing Varies So Much Between Glove Types
A leather work glove and a coated knit glove, even in the "same" size, fit differently because leather stretches and molds to the hand with break-in, while a knit shell with a nitrile or polyurethane coating holds its shape from day one and doesn't loosen over time. Chemical-resistant dipped gloves, often molded on a hand form rather than knit, tend to run narrower through the fingers than a knit-based glove of the same nominal size, which catches people who buy their usual size across categories without checking. Fit for Layering and Liners
