How to Wash Workwear So It Lasts Twice as Long
The average tradesperson throws workwear into the hottest wash, tumbles it on high, and wonders why their pants look worn out after six months. Wash technique matters. It is not complicated, but the habits that ruin cotton and ripstop workwear are widespread enough that addressing them directly can realistically double the effective life of quality work clothing.
Temperature: The Biggest Lever
Hot water washing is the single most damaging routine care choice for cotton workwear. Here is what hot water does to cotton fabric over repeated cycles:
- Breaks down the bond between cotton fibers in the yarn
- Causes cumulative shrinkage, tightening the fabric and stressing seams
- Fades dye faster, which is an appearance issue but also correlates with fiber degradation
- Degrades elastane in stretch-blend fabrics faster than the rest of the fabric, causing the stretch to fail
Warm water (90 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit) cleans workwear effectively, including soil, grease, and sweat deposits. Cold water is appropriate for lightly soiled days. Hot water (above 120 degrees) should be reserved for specific decontamination needs, such as exposure to chemical or biological hazard. Using hot water for regular cleaning is unnecessary and damaging.
Detergent Selection
Standard household detergents work for workwear. Two additives that commonly accompany household detergent are harmful to work clothing and should be avoided:
Fabric softener. Fabric softener deposits a coating on the cotton fiber surface that reduces friction and feels smoother. It also clogs the fiber weave, reduces moisture wicking, and weakens cotton tensile strength over time. For hi-vis clothing in particular, fabric softener residue reduces the fluorescent brightness of the dye. Do not use softener on any workwear.
Bleach on non-cotton garments. Chlorine bleach is sometimes used to restore white or light-colored work shirts. On 100% cotton, diluted bleach is acceptable periodically. On poly-cotton blends, bleach degrades the polyester fiber and causes the garment to develop small holes and pill rapidly. Check the fiber content before bleaching anything.
For heavy grease or oil stains, pre-treat with a petroleum-based stain remover or mechanic's hand soap before washing. Bar soap rubbed directly into a grease stain before the wash cycle is highly effective and cheap.
Load Size and Wash Cycle
Heavy work pants, jeans, and duck cloth garments should be washed in a moderate load, not a packed drum. Overloading causes garments to fold and crease under weight during agitation, which creates accelerated wear at the fold points. This is most visible as lines of fading or thin spots that appear across the mid-leg or at the waist fold.
Use a normal or heavy-duty cycle for most workwear. The gentle cycle is too short to clean heavily soiled items. For FR (flame-resistant) clothing specifically, follow the manufacturer's care instructions exactly, as improper washing of FR garments can compromise the flame-resistant treatment.
Drying: Air Dry When You Can
Tumble drying on high heat causes the same fiber degradation as hot water washing, compounded by the mechanical agitation. Heavy cotton duck or denim pants tumbled on high heat will shrink, stiffen, and develop stress lines at the stress points of the drum's tumbling action.
Air drying is the best option for anything heavy. Hang pants from the waistband, not the cuffs. Hanging from the cuffs stretches the leg length of the fabric under the garment's own wet weight and distorts the hang. Hang from the waistband or lay flat. Cotton that air dries comes out stiffer than tumble-dried cotton. A brief five-minute tumble on low heat after air drying restores the hand feel without the fiber damage of a full heat cycle.
For FR clothing, air drying is not just preferred but often required by the flame-resistant treatment specification. High heat drying can strip FR finishes from treated garments.
FR Clothing: Special Requirements
Flame-resistant workwear requires specific care to maintain its protective properties. Key rules:
- Wash separately from non-FR clothing to prevent contamination with flammable residue from other garments
- Never use chlorine bleach on FR garments; bleach degrades the FR chemical bond
- Do not use starch or fabric softener; both create fuel layers on the fabric surface
- Air dry or tumble dry on low only
- Inspect for holes, worn areas, and contamination with oils or flammables before each shift; contaminated FR clothing offers reduced protection
Pre-Wash Steps That Save Fabric
Empty all pockets before washing. Hardware items, screws, and fasteners in pockets damage drum finishes and, more importantly, damage the pockets themselves by puncturing or abrading the fabric under wash agitation. A single nail in a pocket can create holes in the pocket bag or abrade the inner thigh fabric against it throughout the wash cycle.
Close all zippers and fasten buttons before washing. Open metal zippers abrade adjacent fabric in the drum. Unclasped buttons stress the buttonholes during agitation.
Turn heavy cotton pants inside out. The outer surface, which shows visible wear, is the surface that receives the most abrasion against the drum and other garments. Inside-out washing protects the outer surface and extends the visual life of the garment even as the inner surface ages.
Warm water, no softener, no bleach on blends, moderate load, air dry or low tumble, and turn heavy cotton inside out. These five changes to your wash routine will noticeably extend the working life of quality workwear.
Repair Before Replacement
A seam split or a worn knee is not the end of a work pant. Seam repairs with a home sewing machine take five minutes and restore structural integrity completely. Reinforcing patches can be ironed or sewn over thin spots at the knee or seat before they develop into holes. A pair of $80 work pants that you repair twice over two years costs far less per day than replacing them annually. Keep thread in a matching color and a few iron-on denim patches in the drawer where you store work clothes.
